Navigating the ‘Higher’ Self

Freedom through flying By MEGAN ROSE MOSELEY

Jungle Zipline Maui Canopy Tours’ seven zipline excursion will test your mental strength, have your heart beating and expand your knowledge of Hawai’i’s unique plant life.

With two other zipline tours available, this two-and-a-half hour option offers adventurers a chance to soar more than 500 ft. above the wild Haiku forest. The first zipline of the day is the tallest and longest. It overlooks a garden and offers a nice, smooth ride. Watch out for the landing and make sure not to kick the tour guide waiting at the end.
After that first zipline, the rest are a breeze, with each one offering a unique experience. Some go faster than others and each one gives you a different perspective of the forest below your dangling feet. The fan-favorite is the number six zipline, which provides you with a beautiful ocean view of Maui’s north shore.

While the thrill of ziplining is the appeal of the tour, you’ll most likely enjoy hiking through the forest on the way to each platform and learning all about the native plants along the way. From Hala trees to wild ginger, the tour guides may impress you with their knowledge of Native Hawaiian plants and their various uses. They might also annoy you with their morbid sense of humor before taking off on one of the ziplines. Don’t take it personally. They’re just joking. You’ll be fine.

By the end of the tour you’ll be so comfortable with zipping through the air you might want to try a trick or two. On the final zipline, the tour guides will inform you on how to hang upside down. Simply lean back and enjoy the ride.

If you’re looking to conquer your fear of heights, or just wanting to get a little dirty while stepping outside of your comfort zone, this might be your ticket. Located on the North Shore of Maui in an area known in ancient times as Waipi’o, this unique Eco Tour is exciting and educational. You’ll have no choice but to settle into the experience and embrace the beauty that Maui’s wild and rustic nature has to offer.
